How can Derby Health Management help your Business?

Health Surveillance

Some health surveillance is required by law and some as a result of a health risk assessment. Where employers are relying on controls to protect the employee from hazards that pose risk to health, health surveillance services will verify the effectiveness of those controls.

Derby Health Management aims to provide a comprehensive range of flexible health surveillance programmes to clients across the Midlands. We aim to make this often complex area as easy to navigate as possible to help employers fulfil their legal duties.

Health Surveillance looks for symptoms and gathers clinical measurements that help identify early signs of illness of disease associated with the health hazards that employees are working with.

Management Referrals

If you have an employee who is off sick or whose health is affecting their ability to work, an occupational health assessment can help.

Our Occupational Health Nurses have an in-depth understanding of work and its effect on health and vice versa. A report will provide further information to help you as the employer consider reasonable adjustment or support that can be provided within the workplace.

We offer remote and in-person assessments. Broadly speaking they are the same and will have similar outcomes in terms of our assessments and recommendations. We have found that employees are more comfortable talking from their own home which can sometimes make the process a little easier for them to manage.

Safety Critical and Fitness for Work Medicals

These assessments determine if someone is fit to perform tasks that could be dangerous for themselves or others. These include:

Working at heights

Working in confined spaces

Fork Lift truck driver / mechanised handling equipment

Company vehicle driver

Construction site workers

Our Aims

Our priority is to ensure you are getting the Occupational Health Services that are needed. From first contact, we will undertake an occupational health needs analysis, reviewing your risk assessments to determine and quantify your health surveillance requirements.

Ongoing Occupational Health Nurse input is included in our day rate: you will have a named OH Nurse who knows and understands your company, your controls and your processes. Contract Management is framed around regular meetings to discuss grouped data and an annual meeting to review your requirements and align delivery to your needs.

On-site health surveillance is often delivered by our Occupational Health Technicians. OHTs are skilled and have a good understanding of the importance of the data that they collect and its relevance to your health and safety hierarchy of controls. All surveillance is signed off by your named OH Nurses.

We are partnered with Global Occupational Health Solutions

Derby Health Management is delighted to confirm that they have take the exciting step of forming a strategic partnership with Global Occupational Health Solutions.

Global Occupational Health Solutions is a well established OH provider based in Brighton, providing services in South East England. Under their Clinical Director Pippa Crouch, Global OHS provides bespoke OH services and in June 2024 successfully re-accredited with SEQOHS.

SEQOHS stands for Safe, Effective, Quality Occupational Health Services. Professionally led, it is based on a set of standards for occupational health services in the UK and beyond. Occupational Health services must demonstrate that they meet these standards through a peer reviewed process before accreditation can be awarded.

In the UK, SEQOHS is the only independent and impartial occupational health specific accredited award.

Derby Health Management, as part of the partnership agreement, will be providing occupational health services that align with Global's and therefore SEQOHS standards. Our work will be regularly audited and both companies have agreed reciprocal working arrangements to cover annual leave so a named OH Nurse is available to assist if required.

We cover East Midlands

We cover Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire. This locality means that our Clinical Director can easily reach you to discuss your OH delivery and provide appropriate advice on health surveillance and other occupational health requirements.

News

I was delighted (and nervous) to have been asked to present at the UKHCA ListenUp Conference. Talking about health surveillance: the do's and try not to's among a packed room of eighty delegates who live and breathe hearing health resulted in some interesting conversations afterwards.

The talks delivered today ranged from the pitfalls of over attenuation, whether the PPE provided is sufficient and suitable and onto balloons. When popped, they make a noise which, when measured, returned a surprising result!

Protecting the hearing of employees is

vital to preserve health outcomes.

People who lose their hearing are more likely to become isolated and are at higher risk of dementia.

Attenuation is key: if the attenuation is too high, this can affect compliance as the employee tries to re-engage with their surroundings.

Similarly, if the attenuation is too high, they may not be able to hear alerts and alarms that are there to help them safe.

Health surveillance is vital to detect signs of early hearing loss, which can be detected on longitudinal comparison between up to three years worth of audiograms as well as looking at the current audiogram to detect signs of noise induced hearing loss. Greater scrutiny gives the employers more chances to understand if their noise controls are working - invaluable in today's world of 'no win no fee' claims.
